Walking in
At the door, Orthodox Christians make the sign of the cross. In the narthex, you can light a candle and pray for the living and the departed. Light as many candles as you wish.
If you arrive on a Sunday morning, Matins will usually have started. Do not be surprised if the church looks half empty. People arrive, venerate the icons and pray quietly before the Divine Liturgy begins.
Standing, sitting, and what it means
We usually stand to pray. St Paul writes that “faith comes by hearing” (Romans 10:17).
That said, seating is available, and there are points where sitting is expected:
- After the beginning of the Liturgy until the Small Entrance
- During the Epistle reading and the homily
- After the Canon of the Eucharist and before the Lord’s Prayer
Stand for the Small and Great Entrances, the Gospel reading, the Canon of the Eucharist, the Lord’s Prayer, and Holy Communion.
The Liturgy runs for about an hour and twenty minutes.
Visitors do not need to know these terms before they attend.
What language is it in?
Serbian, Church Slavonic, and at least 40% English. The exact mix depends on the day and who is present. The congregation follows the same order in each language.
Do I need to be Serbian?
No. The parish belongs to the Serbian Orthodox Metropolitanate of Australia and New Zealand. Anyone can attend.
